The seasonal calendar for online sellers: when to get ready
Halloween, Black Friday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day: the dates that move sales and how many weeks ahead you should start preparing.

Anyone who sells online learns it quickly: holidays aren't prepared the week before. Buyers start searching weeks in advance, marketplaces need time to push a new listing up, and suppliers slow down around the holidays. Here are the main dates and when to start.
The dates and the right lead time
| Occasion | When | Start preparing |
|---|---|---|
| Halloween | October 31 | 6-8 weeks before, from early September |
| Black Friday | the Friday after US Thanksgiving, late November | 6 weeks before |
| Christmas | December 25 | 8 weeks before, from late October |
| Valentine's Day | February 14 | 6 weeks before, from early January |
| Easter | moves every year, between March and April | 5-6 weeks before |
| Mother's Day | depends on the country: March in the UK, May in the US and most of Europe | 6 weeks before |
| Father's Day | depends on the country: March 19 in Italy and Spain, June in the US and the UK | 4 weeks before |
| Back to school | August and September | 8 weeks before, from July |
If you sell in more than one country, check the local dates: Mother's and Father's Day can be months apart.
Why so early
Marketplaces need time. On Etsy and Amazon a new listing starts from zero: it takes weeks of visits and first sales to climb the results. A Christmas listing published in December arrives too late.
Ads cost more close to the date. In the two weeks before Black Friday, competition pushes ad prices up. Those who built an audience and data earlier spend less.
Shipping slows down. Print on demand and suppliers run at full capacity in November and December: production times can double. Communicate the last order dates for on-time delivery.
How to prepare, in four steps
- Pick the products for the season, starting with the ones that sold last year.
- Prepare photos and listings with the words people search for in that period ("gift for her", "gift ideas for dad").
- Run a small ad test early, with a maximum budget and a stop threshold: you enter the busy season knowing what works.
- Set the last shipping dates and write them in the listing and in your messages.
Look at your own numbers
The dates are the same for everyone, but your seasons aren't. After a year of sales, look at your quarters: if a product sells mostly in the fall, prepare it in the summer. That is where you see the difference between chasing the holidays and arriving ready.
In short
- Holidays need 4-8 weeks of preparation.
- Christmas and Black Friday are the busiest: start in late October.
- Easter, Mother's and Father's Day move: check the dates for each country.
- Test ads before the busy season.
- After a year, use your seasons, not just the calendar.
