Running a side business next to your job: a five-step weekly system

A few hours in the evenings and on weekends are enough if they are organized. A simple system to decide what to do, when to do it and how to tell whether you are making progress.

If you run a business next to a job, you have a problem full-timers don't: time is short and comes in pieces. An hour in the evening, half a Saturday morning. Without a system, those hours go into deciding what to do instead of doing it.

This is a five-step weekly system built for people with 5 to 10 hours a week.

1. One phase at a time

Every project moves through different phases: idea, research, preparation, launch, growth. The first mistake is working on all of them at once: opening the store while you are still looking for the product, posting on social media before the website exists.

Decide which phase you are in and work only on the steps of that phase. Everything else waits.

2. The Sunday review: 20 minutes

Once a week, always at the same time, answer three questions:

  • What did I finish last week?
  • What do the numbers say: income, expenses, tests running?
  • What are the three most important things for next week?

Three, not ten. With only a few hours available, three things done are worth more than ten started.

3. Short blocks with a clear goal

Evening hours pay off when you start every session already knowing what to do. Before you end a session, write down the next concrete step ("write descriptions for the first 5 products", not "work on the store").

That way the next session starts right away, without the first twenty minutes lost remembering where you left off.

4. Your phone for the small stuff

Plenty of tasks don't need a computer: logging an expense, saving an idea, replying to a supplier, uploading a photo. Do them in the gaps, from your phone, and keep your computer hours for work that needs focus.

5. One number to check every week

Pick one number that tells you whether you are moving forward, matched to your phase:

  • in research: how many products or ideas you have actually evaluated;
  • at launch: how many sales or inquiries you have received;
  • in growth: your monthly balance against your target.

Checking it every Sunday turns the feeling of "I'm not getting anywhere" into a concrete figure, and it is often better than you think.

Key takeaways

  • Work on one phase at a time.
  • 20 minutes of review a week, with three priorities.
  • End every session by writing down the next step.
  • Use your phone for quick tasks.
  • Check one number every week.
